name story
Emily Marigold Hall. Emily Hall. Emily. All versions of my name. Now, this name that you have just read three times, it may be a bit bland, but it is my name and I like the history of it. To tell you the story, I have to start in the middle (the middle being my middle name). Its a cold November night and my mother is all but crawling down the road to her grandmothers house, clutching but a single seed in her chubby, young hand. The seed is that of a marigold. If she were to drop this seed, it would mean impending doom for all of eternity... Obviously, there is pretty much no truth to that story, but it managed to introduce the two main characters into the middle of... me. Those characters are my mother, and her grandmother Mildred Lucille. My mother- in childhood and adulthood alike- absolutely adored her grandmother, and one of her fondest memories with my great grandma was planting marigolds (a fluffy, frilly, yellow/ orange looking flower) in the garden. When my mother was a few months pregnant with me, she received the news that Mildred Lucille had passed away. Since she hadn't lived to see her first great-grandchild, my mother made her apart of me; made a living commemoration to her grand mother, through me and my middle name. Her fondest memory being the marigolds, it became my middle name in a beautiful yet tragic sort of way.
My first and last names are much simpler stories. My first name was not as popular in 1994 as it is now; if it was i don't think it would have been chosen. But all the story is, is that my mom picked my middle name, so my dad picked my first. I was not named after any one (as far as I've been told), my dad just liked the name. My mom suggested it I believe, because of her love for Emily Dickinson, the poet, and my dad just liked it. My last name I'm not so sure of. i know that it came from my dad, and his dad before, but I'm not even sure if it was my great-grandpas' before. Shallow, i know, but i am constantly getting my karma for not knowing my origins, as my teachers walk past me saying things like "Emily, no running in the hall" or "stay out of the hall...s!". They think that they are hilarious. They're not.
That is pretty much the end of the story for my name, or is it? I cant tell you where you may or may not hear this name in the future, but I can tell you that if you do hear of me, you will be hearing of a girl named Marigold. The reason for that being that I: A) think Emily is way to boring and common, and B) because i would like to honor my great grandmother who I never had the chance to meet and who loved marigolds.
